These Twin Souls: Chapter Nine

Chapter Nine
What You Wanted

If I could go back in time and change a few things, not letting Verona leave without telling her I loved her would be the first thing I would do! Then maybe our lives would have been different, maybe we would have been happy earlier. I woke up to the sensation of Verona's hand down my boxers, "Wake up Ry!" she murmured and ran her tongue up my spine.
"Verona...stop!" I growled and pulled her hand out. I sat up and turned my head to look at her, she was still naked under there, pouting. Then with a wicked grin she threw the covers off to expose her bare body in it's entirety as I tried to compose myself.
"Like what you see?" she winked and swayed her legs slowly back and forth. Of course I did! What a stupid question!
"I have to call into the main office this morning..." I managed to reply as my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth, "...so let's get some breakfast and..."
"Don't you want me for breakfast?" the whispery tone of her voice made my head spin and I felt nauseous. Why, after all this time, was I still so uncomfortable around her? Why did I still feel that we were doing something wrong? "After all, I am going to be your wife!" she giggled and jumped up behind me, wrapping her arms around my neck and kissing my face excitedly.

These Twin Souls: Chapter Eight

Chapter Eight
A Tangled Web

Ben had a tantrum that lasted a whole fifteen minutes until he realised he was being childish. He had a reason to be pissed off with me, of course he did! I'd promised a take-out and some quality time with his big brother, something he had been lacking this summer since Verona and I made up. Which made me think of her, what exactly did I hope to achieve with all of this? I didn't do too well around weeping women, which is probably why I did what I did! "Are you constantly led by your dick these days Ry?" he knew that wasn't me, he knew I was never like that and I wouldn't suddenly change now.
"You know that's not true Ben!" I shook my head at him, disappointed that he even suggested it.
"Well why are all these women coming before me? Huh? Before US???" I grabbed hold of him and pulled him in for a rough hug as he struggled. "Geez you stink of aftershave!" he complained and pushed me away. "I hope she's worth it!" he spat and left me in my room to think about the mess I had made. My phone rang in my jacket pocket, it was Verona, how I was going to explain this situation was anybody's guess!
"Hey handsome!" she purred, and I felt lousy.
"Hey there! Listen now is not a good time I have an appointment tonight so..." I heard her sigh sadly, then she seemed to recover and accept my apologies.
"No probs Ry, let's go for a picnic tomorrow if it stays dry okay?"

These Twin Souls: Chapter Seven

Chapter Seven
Life & Death

It was mid May and I lay on top of my bed, fully clothed, as I thought about Denny. It had been a years since we lost him and I found myself thinking of him more and more as time passed. The only person I had to talk to about it was Verona, and since my altercation with Nick and his bit on the side, I was avoiding even seeing her in the street these days. Ben was coming home in a few weeks after his first term at university, I was excited to have him back but I knew that meant Jade was returning with him meaning I wouldn't have him back in the way I'd hoped. I missed my little brother, I missed him more than I ever thought I would! Business at the garage was doing well and I could finally afford to get the roof fixed on my house, get a new kitchen and install a bath in the bathroom along with the shower. Jade liked baths, and since she would be spending even more time in my home I thought it only fair to pander to her every need like I used to with Verona! I couldn't help it, I only ever wanted my nearest and dearest to be happy! Plus I still felt guilty for ending it with her mother. The lovely Gail, I bumped into her at the supermarket a few days before and we chatted for twenty minutes, it was friendly...I yearned for her which surprised me. I wanted to hold her, she looked so frail and delicate.

These Twin Souls: Chapter Six

Chapter Six
Numb

"You don't have to wear it!" Gail mumbled as we stood in her bedroom looking into her oversized mirror, I smiled cheekily and pulled her towards me.
"I love it! Why would I not wear it???" I kissed the top of her head and squeezed her shoulder gently as she giggled.
"I hoped you would, it's so you!" She brushed down the midnight blue shirt she had bought me for Christmas, tugging it at the bottom and fussing. "It feels so nice and soft, and it brings out the gold specks in your eyes!" Gail and I had been seeing each other for four months and I'd never been happier. I'd kept my mouth shut about seeing Nick with another woman and two weeks later he and Verona were back together and planning their wedding, I was immune to her now! I couldn't care less if she married him or not! Ben and Jade were happily settled at University together and studying hard, in fact I practically lived at Gail's now that Ben had moved out and the house was so empty. Evan put a dampener on our happiness just a tad, but Gerry was more than accommodating when it came to taking him off of our hands for the odd few nights. So all in all, life was good! Gail looked up at me with those big green eyes and winked. "We've got at least an hour before our reservation, fancy a lie down?" We still hadn't consummated our relationship, I was giving her the space she needed, but it was fine by me as I wasn't ready to get that serious despite the L word getting mentioned a few months before.

Trust

When Gail finally woke up, she immediately smiled at the sight of me. "Mornin'!" I mumbled as she rolled onto her back and stretched out her arms.
"You're a sight for sore eyes!" she giggled and let out a huge yawn.
"I'm sorry about last night I..."
"Oh don't worry sweetie! Maybe it wasn't the time!" she shrugged and sat up, straightening out her dress and heading for the bathroom. Suddenly she turned and gave me an impish grin, "Unless you want to join me in the shower? Save some water? I promise not to fall asleep again!" she winked, but after what I'd seen the night before I was in no mood for any of that.
"I need to get back home for Ben, I'll call you later okay?" I made my excuses and gathered up my jacket and car keys. "Here's some money for a cab, sorry to love you and leave you but..." she waved a hand at me and shook her head smiling, but nothing could hide the hurt in her eyes.

These Twin Souls: Chapter Four

Chapter Four
Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

I hadn't spoken to Verona in days, my life consisted of making sure Ben was fed and going to work. That was all going to change as of today, Ben's graduation! As I stood by the mirror in my room tying my tie, I could see her standing in her driveway looking up at my window. I ignored her like I always did these days and she went back inside. It was killing me, I wanted her still but in order to hang onto any self respect I had left, I had to give her a body swerve! She called the house, she sent me texts, she stopped Ben in the street to ask for me...I still ignored her! Ben was proud of me, he told me so every day, but it didn't make it any easier. Nick came to the door and wanted a word the other night, Ben told him I was in bed with a headache and that I wasn't keeping all that well lately. It seemed to satisfy him and he left. As I saw her in the corner of my eye walking slowly back into her house, my heart thudded in my chest as I straightened my tie and rubbed down my dark blue suit. She didn't matter today, my baby brother did!

These Twin Souls: Chapter Three

Chapter Three
Jealousy Thy Name is...

It was hot for May, I had my window open as my curtains blew in and out with the breeze. I lay on top of the covers on my bed wearing only my boxers, I lay there in the dark thinking of Verona and her big blue eyes. I had just buried my best friend four days before and all I could think about was his little sister and how she made me feel. As we stood by the plane watching Denny's coffin get carried out by his men, she held my hand tightly and all I wanted was to take hold of her and kiss her to death. Denny's body was only a few feet away and Verona was driving me crazy, I should have been grieving but it was all about her! She lay her head on my shoulder and cried, I still wanted to have her all to myself and not in a brotherly way at all. I wanted her so badly, despite her little announcement at the beach. The funeral was difficult, I was allowed to sit with the family but I deliberately sat away from Verona, it wasn't appropriate for me to be anywhere near her at that time. Ben was still not talking to me, he barely said two words to me during the wake. My reminiscing of the past few days was interrupted by the sound of a car braking across the street. It was 7am on a Saturday morning, who would be arriving at the Marsh's at this time? I pulled myself off the bed and looked out of my window. A young man with dark brown hair got out of a red Jaguar, he stood up straight, all six feet of him at least, then he ran his hands through his hair looking up at the Marsh house. Verona came running out of the house towards him and leapt into his arms squealing all the way. "Nicky!" she exclaimed, smothering his neck and face with kisses. This was the fiance! I hated him already!

These Twin Souls: Chapter Two

Chapter Two
Nothing Has Changed

I looked purposely at her as her hair blew gently in the wind. She smiled slightly and waved, turned her back on me and entered her family home. I waited for her to come to me, five whole hours, and then I went to bed. I was up at 5am that morning, my body clock was wired that way for work. I slowly headed downstairs as Ben's snoring echoed around the house, I looked out of my living room window into the darkness of the street, only the street lights glowing as the Marsh house looked like a black cloud was smothering it. What an apt look, we were all devastated over Denny, there were clouds covering all of our hearts! I thought of my sweet Verona sleeping in her old bed for the first time in years. I thought about her faint smile and the way her hair blew in the breeze, how she hadn't changed much since she was a baby...those blue eyes still brought me to my knees! I was more than a little hurt that she didn't come over and say hello, not even for a couple of minutes, but I guessed her parents were her priority over me and so they should have been!

These Twin Souls: Chapter One

Chapter One
Homecoming

"Why would you even do that???" My voice was shrill, it grated on me nevermind what it was doing to Ben as he stood with his head hung towards the ground. I could hear his little sobs and sniffles and it made disciplining him all the more painful. "Ben you really need to stop this!" I sighed in frustration, his body shook with every sob, his fingers twitched as he wrung his hands.
"They called me a freak again Ry! What am I supposed to do?" His eyes looked up at me, wet and pleading.
"You're going to the big school after the summer! You need to man up!" What was I saying? I wouldn't let Verona go through this crap when she was his age and she wasn't even my flesh and blood! I looked down at my brother for a moment and my heart wanted to break. He was only twelve, he'd lost both his parents and now he was stuck with a jacka$$ like me! I worked twelve hour shifts most days and when I wasn't working I was trying to pay the bills and keep the house clean. Denny wrote regularly and was always nagging me to find myself a wife, I already had found my one and only but she was finishing her first year of university and had forgotten all about me!
"If you'd just give Natalie a chance Ry! I really like her, and she keeps asking you out!" Natalie Carter was the receptionist and secretary at the garage, Ben was right, she did keep asking me out. She was blonde, had legs to die for and she was beautiful but I wasn't interested. All I wanted was my sweet Verona!

These Twin Souls: Prologue

Prologue:

My dearest Verona,
I remember the day you were born, it was a Saturday and Denny was so excited. He wanted you to be a boy, I wanted to play Pacman but we just couldn't focus! My parents were watching Denny while your parents headed to the hospital, and when we were finally allowed to visit he ran down the corridor of the maternity ward as if Hulk Hogan was at the other end, so desperate to meet you. The first time I laid eyes on you was when you were lying in your little cot next to your mother, you were so tiny. I was staring at you with the biggest grin on my face, Denny was huffing because you were a girl! Your mum called over to me, did I want to hold you? And at that moment I felt the most overwhelming burst of love, I wanted so badly to hold you, I was an eight year old boy and all I wanted to do at that moment was hold a baby, not just any baby...YOU! From that moment on I spent all of my spare time with you, I fed and changed you, I took you out in your pram, I played with you! Denny couldn't understand why, and neither could I! All I knew was I had to be with you, I had to have you near me! And my feelings have never changed, they never will! As I watch you load your car, I know I'll never see you again! You're off to the big city to make a name for yourself, and quite right too! Do all of the things I could never do, live your life! But always know that I will be there for you if you ever need me, always!
All my love, Ry xxx

Other Sides of the World! Chapter Ten: Waiting.

Previous Chapters:
Chapter Eight: Nuptials
Chapter Nine: Tragedy.

Waiting, when it's a matter of life and death, can drive you utterly mad if you let it. It feels like forever when someone's life is on the line! Sitting in a white corridor, the smell of chemicals and the breakfast from the cafeteria downstairs lingered in the air. Rhona Boyle looked down at her light pink dress, Oz's dried blood soaked into it, and at that moment she realised the dress was ruined. There was no way that blood was coming out, what a thing to think about at a time like this! But sometimes you just had to steer your mind away from the fact that the man you loved was lying on a table being operated on at that very moment! The waiting was bad enough, but Lachie's pacing was irritating her, she wanted to hit him and that wasn't fair because the person who really did deserve a good smack in the face was Jamie! "Whit the hell urr they dayin' in there!!!" Lachie growled and threw himself down on the chair beside her, biting his nails and grunting to himself. Rhona couldn't get the picture of the Landrover disappearing from view out of her mind, and her mother grabbing her and dragging her into the family car to follow them. She also couldn't get the sight of Oz lying on the ground covered in blood and looking like death out of her mind either!

Previous Chapters:

"Next please!" Helen Andrews called to Rhona as she stood in the queue at the Post Office. "NEXT PLEASE!!!" she repeated a little louder. "Rhona Boyle are you in this queue or not?" she barked as Rhona shook herself out of the daydream she was basking in.
"Sorry Helen, I was miles away!" she smiled and approached the desk.
"So I see!" Helen frowned impatiently at her. "What can I do for you then?" her manner was always very terse so Rhona did not take offence at her tone.
"I want to send this card to California!" she beamed, it was Oz's mother's birthday and Rhona thought it would be a nice thought to send her a birthday card from Scotland.
"Well pop it on the scales then!" Helen pointed a bony finger towards them as Rhona obliged. After tapping away at her keyboard for a moment, she looked up with a sneer and said "First class will be £2.34!"
"WHAT?" Rhona's eyes grew wide. "For a wee card like that???" Helen closed her eyes and pursed her lips before replying in a shrill tone,
"Rhona it's no the size, it's the weight!"
"Aye but still!"
"Do you want to send it second class? Because that'll be £1.59!" Rhona thought for a moment then shook her head.

"Quit squirming about Lachie!" Rhona scolded as she tugged his tie into place and tucked it inside his waistcoat.
"Am nervous awright?" he replied shrilly and adjusted what good work his sister had just done.
"LACHIE I just did that!!!" she rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
"A know but it wiz too tight!" Oz appeared walking oddly, he'd never worn a kilt before and it was an experience to say the least.
"Hey guys!" he grunted as he fiddled with the belt on his kilt. "Please can I wear my boxers?" he whined as Rhona gave her brother a disapproving frown.
"Och Lachie you never made him go commando! That's just not right!"
"It's tradition!" Lachie defended his actions, "A true Scotsman wears nothin' under the kilt!"
"But Lachie Oz is American! These rules do not apply! Oz sweetheart you can wear your boxers if you want!" Rhona smiled sweetly at him and lunged forward, grabbing his kilt she tried to pull it up and peek underneath as they both began to tug at it.

Previous Chapters:

Lachie Boyle sat opposite his sister at the dinner table that evening wondering if he should tell her about the visitor earlier that day. Hamish eyed his son curiously, knowing that something was bothering him, but continued to attack his pork chop with his knife and fork. Eventually the curiosity got the better of him and he slammed his cutlery down noisily. "Awright son, whit's the matter eh?" he leaned his elbows on the table and clasped his hands together.
"Nothin'!" Lachie mumbled and pushed his peas around his plate guiltily.
"C'moan, get it aff yer chist eh?"
"Naw Da, no the noo!" Lachie dropped his fork and pushed his chair away, standing abruptly he excused himself and left the room.
"Right that's it!!!" Hamish growled and followed his son out.

"I see?" Oz returned the smile with a confused expression.
"Well, whit am tryin' tae get at is we've got a block bookin', a hen party and...we need yer room pal!"
"Oh, I see!" he nodded, looking rather disappointed he bent down and lifted his bag from under the bed.
"Whit are ye dayin'?" Lachie blinked.
"Packing, moving on, getting outta here! That's what you want right?" Lachie seemed appalled by this and pulled Oz's bag roughly from his hands.
"Naw! NAW! Well, aye! A want ye tae vacate the room aye! But Da says ye can stay wi me in ma room!"
"Oh I see!" Oz repeated and a relieved smile appeared on his handsome face. "No problem bro!" he nodded and patted Lachie on the arm.

Other Sides of the World! Chapter Five: Reservations.

Rhona slipped out of Oz's grip and took a step back. Her heart was beating so fast it threatened to explode, what did he just say??? As she stood on the spot, her mouth wide open and her eyes wide, Oz waved a hand up and down in front of her face. "Rhona? You okay?" and when she didn't answer, his pearly white smile faded and his mouth drooped into a very sad expression indeed. "I...I thought...you liked me!" he looked down at the sand and made a small hole in it with his shoe.
"It's just..." she began as he looked up at her, with hope in his eyes.
"Yes?"
"...we've only known each other about nine days and..." she could see the desperation in his eyes as she tried to trivialise his feelings.
"So what? You don't think I know when I love someone???" he laughed sadly and jammed his hands in his pockets and looked around the Loch shaking his head and still kicking into the sand with his right foot.

"That's not even a word!!!" Rhona gasped with mock surprise.
"Yes it is!"
"No, it's not in the Oxford English dictionary Oswald, therefore it's not a word!"
"Bejesus is so a word!!!" Oz chuckled and widened his big blue eyes.
"Och, gi us peace will ye!!!" she muttered and shuffled her letters noisily on the rack. She always reverted back to her native Scots when Oz made her mad. "Right!" she exclaimed and placed a few letters on the board.
"Um, no!" Oz laughed even louder and shook his head.
"What?" she shrugged and took more letters out of the bag.
"I am NOT giving you THAT!" Oz crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair, his lips pouting out of his beard.

Other Sides of the World! Chapter Three: Altercations.

Previous Chapters:

Rhona had only just taken off her wet clothes and dried herself off when there was a succession of huge bangs on her bedroom door, followed by Lachie's panicked voice. "Rhona??? Rhona, c'moan wee yin open the door! Maw and Da are worried sick!"
"Coming!" she called faintly and quickly threw on her pyjamas from under her pillow. Opening the door gingerly, she felt the full force of her older brother shoving it further and barging into her room. "Lachie!" she protested as he paced her floor running his large hands through his unkempt hair.
"Where did ye go??? Auntie Mary said there wiz a commotion doon at the jetty! By the time a goat there ye were gone!" he looked her up and down, then added "Why are ye aw wet?"
"I'm sorry, I fell in the Loch!" she looked down at the carpet sheepishly.
"Ye WHIT???" Lachie placed his hands on his hips and leaned forward, a look of shock on his face.

Other Sides of the World. Chapter Two: Encounters.

First chapter here: Chapter One: Arrivals

Rhona looked around the hotel bar and took in her surroundings, nothing had changed at all while she'd been away! Her bar was just as she left it! As she stocked up the fridges and turned on the gases in the cellar, she thought about her twenty sixth birthday party and Jamie's big surprise. How surprising the rest of her life with him turned out to be. Lachie appeared and plonked himself onto a bar stool, folding his arms and placing them on the bar with a dull thud sighing all the way. "What's up Lachie?" Rhona enquired as she inspected a wine glass by holding it up to one of the spotlights on the ceiling.

Other Sides of The World. Chapter One: Arrivals.

Rhona Boyle stood at the gate looking up at the extremely old building that had been in her family for over two centuries and felt a lump form in her throat. The last time she stood at this gate and walked down that little path, she was heading to the big city and to a new life, but now? As she lifted the latch and let the gate swing open, her heart felt heavy and she let the sadness she was keeping inside of her all through the long journey home out into the open. No tears, she would not cry as she walked up the path with concrete feet, dragging one in front of the other with difficulty. She would not shed a tear, she would enter that building with her head held high, with dignity and with dry eyes!
